Alan H. Shiller

March 19, 1951 — December 28, 2013

Shiller, Alan H., of O Fallon, Missouri, died on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at the age of 62.  He is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie; two talented sons and their devoted wives, Scott and Kerry Shiller and Casey and Anne Shiller.

He was a speech communication professor and taught over 10,000 students in his career.  He graduated from Emerson College in Boston and received a graduate degree from Purdue University.  His first teaching position was at the University of Georgia. He then accepted a position to teach at Lindenwood College in St. Charles, where he served as a tenured professor for ten years.  In 2000, Alan joined the faculty of the Speech Communication Department at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.  In 2002, he received the Teaching Excellence Award from SIUE.  Over the years he also taught classes at St. Louis Community College at Meramec, Webster University, Central Methodist University, St. Louis, Maryville University, and Deaconess College of Nursing.

He was President of the Faculty Union at SIUE and served as a board member of the Illinois Education Association and the IEA Higher Education Council.

A dynamic speaker, Alan gave hundreds of speeches to many local and national organizations as well as serving as a communication consultant.

His perfect night out was enjoying dinner at a new restaurant and attending a theatrical production with his devoted wife.
