Arthur E. Baue

Dr. Arthur Edward Baue, was born on October 7, 1929, in St. Louis, Mo., to Viola Wegener and Arthur Christian Baue and was raised in St. Charles with his brother, David, and sister, Carolyn. He attended Westminster College in Fulton, Mo., attaining his A.B. degree summa cum laude in 1950. He obtained his medical education at Harvard Medical School, graduating cum laude in 1954. He remained in Boston and performed his general surgery training at Massachusetts General Hospital (1954-1961) before pursuing advanced thoracic surgical training in 1962 at the Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, England. He returned to the United States and, after a year on the faculty of the University of Missouri School of Medicine (1962-1963), was recruited and promoted to associate professor of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania (1963-67). He returned to Missouri as the surgeon-in-chief and Edison Professor of Surgery at the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis (1967-1975). He was then recruited to Yale as the Guthrie Professor and chair of the Department of Surgery and surgeon-in-chief for Yale-New Haven Hospital (1975-1985) before returning to his hometown to serve as Vice-President of St. Louis University Medical Center from 1985-1997. Dr. Baue was a leading intellectual force in surgery. He wrote and edited 12 books and authored more than 670 publications in the areas of thoracic surgery, shock, general surgery, and surgical education. He delivered hundreds of national and international lectureships and was a member of nearly every major medical society including: the American College of Surgeons, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the American College of Cardiology, the American Medical Association, the American Trauma Society (founding member), the Association for Academic Surgery, the Halsted Society, the Shock Society (serving as president in 1982-1983), the Societé Internationale de Chirurgie, the Society of University Surgeons, the International Shock Society (president 1994-1995), and the American Surgical Association. He was the recipient of innumerable honors and awards and held dozens of national and international leadership positions including: senior editor, Glenn's Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery; chief editor, Archives of Surgery (1977-1988); director, American Board of Surgery (1974-1981); and scientist of the year, the Society of Sigma Xi (1991). He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine in 2008. Dr. Baue served in the United States Air Force Reserve (1955-1957) and was on active duty as captain and assistant chief of surgery at Clark AFB, Luzon, the Philippines (1957-1959), before returning to the U.S. Air Force Reserve (1959-1964). Art married Rosemary Dysart in 1956 and shared 55 years of matrimony until she passed away two months ago. In 1997 Art retired on Fishers Island, N.Y., where Rosemary served as a minister at the Union Chapel Congregation. Art is survived by his children, Patricia (Peter) Nizen of Hamden, Conn.; Arthur Christian (Lisa Billingsley) Baue II of St. Louis, Mo.; and William (Jiyanna Vagedes) Baue of Sunderland, Mass.; as well as grandchildren Marlene and Arthur Christian Baue III; Peter and Tyler Nizen; Clara and Aoife Dahill-Baue; and Emma Vagedes-Plavcan. In addition to services in St. Charles, a memorial service honoring both Art and Rosemary will be held on Saturday, January 14 at 2pm at the Spring Glen Church in Hamden, Connecticut.
