Barbara Jo Murphy of Saint Charles, Missouri, passed away at the age of 80 on Sunday, August 8, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Reba Steeber; her sister, Charlene Pogue; and her brother-in-law, Don Lee Murphy.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Neil Murphy; her children, James (Jeannie) Murphy and Melissa Newfield; her grandchildren, Andrew Murphy, Douglas Murphy, and Christopher Newfield; her siblings, Cheryl Harshfield and Robert (Brenda) Steeber; and her brother-in-law, Orie Pogue.
Early in her life, Barbara decided that she was meant to be a teacher. She began her career teaching the 6
th grade at Wentzville School District, Willowbrook, and Fort Zumwalt. She retired in 1997 after a brilliant, 34-year career. All throughout her time teaching, Barbara enjoyed working with children.
After retirement, Barbara pursued her hobbies such as quilting and genealogical study. She immersed herself in Cherokee culture and gave speeches about Indian heritage. Barbara took art classes and was very talented. She designed and made jewelry and did craft shows where she presented earrings, brooches, and necklaces. She liked to sew, and she made outfits and costumes for her children. There was always a project around the house for her to take on, and she was always up for a challenge.
In 1976, Barbara and her husband moved to the outer parts of St. Charles in the "country" to enjoy life outdoors. She loved to be outdoors gardening her vegetables. She volunteered many years at the St. Charles Jaycee Senior Center and was the president and treasurer of the volunteers. Barbara was a wonderful person and truly the light of her husband’s life. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
