O'Fallon, Missouri

Brian Douglas Smith, M.D. 63, of O'Fallon, Missouri, valiantly battled painful health issues for many years and passed away peacefully on the morning of Sunday, September 17, 2023. Brian was born on September 7, 1960, in Poplar Bluff, MO, to Doris Elaine Smith Chivers and John Arthur Smith. He was a loving older brother to his sister, Shelly Smith. When he was about five years old, he and his family moved to Ballwin, MO. He attended Lafayette High School, where he had many accolades in high school including President of his class, and a member of the National Honors Society as well as being named “most likely to succeed” and “best looking.” He always desired to be a physician, and he went on to get his Bachelor of Arts in Biology at Westminster College in Fulton, MO, in 1982. He had many honors and letters of commendation in his schooling. He attended medical school and received his degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Missouri in 1986 in Columbia, MO. In 1988, Brian completed his internal medicine residency at Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine. Shortly after, he married the love of his life, Leslie Lofgreen on April 22, 1989. He also completed his residency in anesthesiology at St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1991. He was awarded the Robert D. Dripps, M.D. Memorial Award for the Outstanding Graduate Resident in Anesthesiology at St. Louis University that same year. Brian also was a respected member of the Navy Reserves for two years, where he was ready to serve his country, if needed. He was double board certified and on the Board of Directors for more than ten years for Western Anesthesiology Associates Incorporated.

Brian and Leslie welcomed their first child, Katie Lynn, in September of 1991. Then, in May of 1995, they welcomed their son, Ryan. Brian worked as a staff anesthesiologist at St. Johns Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He became board certified in pain management in 1996. Later in his life, he opened his own pain management office in St. Peters, MO, which became a thriving medical center. He was a wonderful clinician, who was revered by his colleagues and staff, while cherished by his patients. He cared deeply for everyone who crossed his path.

Brian was not only extremely enthusiastic about his work but also about his many hobbies. He was an avid runner and worked out several times a week. He also found joy in skiing, especially going on ski trips with his friends and coworkers. He loved all sorts of physical outside activities. He found enjoyment in caring for flowers and adding beauty to his backyards. He is survived by his beloved wife, Leslie Lofgreen Smith; his two loving children, Katie Lynn Lockhart and husband, Mark Lockhart, Ryan Smith; his grandson, Matthew Lockhart; and his cherished sister, Shelly Smith. He was predeceased by his mother, Doris Elaine Smith Chivers, and father, John Arthur Smith.
