Loving husband of 17 years to Marilyn Sutter-Whitehead; beloved son of the late Robert Benjamin and Bessie Whitehead; devoted father of Terry Whitehead, Becky (Joe) Whitehead George, David B. (Lori Johnson) Whitehead; step-father of Laura (Chris) Lager, Julie Sutter, and Dan (Brandi) Sutter; cherished grandfather of Madalyn (Chris) Colbert, Mason George, Grant B. Whitehead, and Drake Whitehead; great-grandfather of Mabry Colbert; step-grandfather of Mollie Lager, Emily Lager, Hannah Lager, Jake Lager, Sophia Sutter, and Jack Sutter. Ben was also preceded in death by his first wife of 44 years and mother of his children, Patricia Whitehead, his siblings LaRue (Albert) Lankford, Robert (Laurine) Whitehead, Billy (Norma) Whitehead, Hilbert (Dot) Whitehead, and Aileen (Gene) Anderson. He was a dear uncle, cousin, and friend to many.
As a child and young man, Ben grew up on a farm in Paris, Tennessee, and he loved farm life. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was stationed in Portland, Oregon, where he met his first wife, Patty. He went to work at McDonnell Douglas in 1957, and after many years of service he retired.
Ben took immaculate care of his lawn and loved to garden in his backyard as well. He loved sports and had season tickets for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball and football teams, and he even has his own brick at Busch Stadium. He was also a fan of hockey, and enjoyed watching games on TV.
Ben liked to stay active, was always hands-on and worked on his own cars. He loved spending time with family and friends, and looked forward to barbecuing with everyone. He was a great dresser and took pride in always looking nice. He was very thrifty and never threw anything away, and would even cut the grass in his old platform wingtip shoes. Ben was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
