Charles Herbert Lamons, 73, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 18, 2024 at Select Specialty hospital in St. Charles, Missouri. He had been hospitalized after a fall in late March, but, despite intensive measures to restore his health, was unable to recover. Charles was predeceased by his parents, Capt. Ernest W. and Dorothy R. Mathews Lamons, brother, Thomas W. Lamons, and sister-in-law, Elizabeth N. Lamons. He was a graduate of Blacksburg High School, class of 1968, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Geology BS 1978. He worked as a cartographer for the US Department of Defense after graduation from college, and then at Kemoll’s, a premier high end dining restaurant in St Louis until it closed in 2023.
In retirement, Charles’ main activities were attending music and performing art events, especially St Louis Symphony Orchestra concerts, reading and travel in the US. He was an avid photographer and had very diversified interests in history, archeology, astronomy, engineering, electronics, wildlife, the natural world, geology, political science, classical literature, ham radio, music, ballet, and theater.
He was kind, and appreciative of friends.
Charles was not a user of computers: he was known for his lengthy, informative and frequent letters.
His remains are being handled by Baue Funeral Home in St. Charles, MO and McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg, VA. His funeral will be held Sunday, September 22, at 1:00 PM at Christ Episcopal Church in Blacksburg, VA.
He will be buried Monday, September 23, at 2:00 PM at Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke, VA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Joseph’s Indian School, SD, or Christ Episcopal Church, Blacksburg, VA.
