Memorial contributions may be made to Good Shepherd U.C.C., St. Charles Humane Society or St. Joseph Health Center. Charles "Charlie" W. Hafer passed away August 31, 2007 at the age of 90. He is survived by a son, Jim and daughter-in-law, Barbara; grandchildren Jimmy and Sara Hagemeyer (Brad); great grandchildren Alexis and Brittany Hagemeyer all of St. Charles; a sister, Shirley Leonard (Mike) of Ozark, Arkansas. Beloved husband of 63 years to the late Dorothy Hafer; dearest son of the late Charles S. and Cassie Hafer; dear brother of the late Ralph Hafer. Charlie opened his first grocery store in 1946 at 911 North Second Street in St. Charles. In 1951, he along with Ernie Hedges opened the first Hedges and Hafer Supermarket. The store was the first in St. Charles to offer self service meat. Charlie was elected Man of the Year in 1971 by the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce. He was also elected to the St. Charles County Amateur Sports Hall of Fame. He was a member of the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce, Exchange Club, past Master of St. Charles Masonic Lodge #241 and Moolah Temple Shriners. Charlie enjoyed music, especially his guitar. He and good friend, Archie Opitz played at many senior citizen homes in years past. They called themselves the "String Busters". He will be forever remembered for his warm smile, generosity and sense of humor.
