Mr. Chester Willis Closson was born on July 15, 1942, to the union of Josh and Mary Jane (nee Chapel) Closson. He was the youngest son born into a family which included five children. Norman, Mary Louise, and Roosevelt each preceded him in death. He is survived by one sister, Lavada Johnson of St. Charles, Missouri.
Having grown up and being a long time resident of the St. Louis area, Chester completed his secondary education at Hadley Technical School. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving our country from 1961 until his honorable discharge in 1964. Chester was formerly united in Holy matrimony to Garlene Campbell and became the proud father of his two sons, Alan and Edward.
After completing his tour in the US Army, Chester began a 40-year career with the United States Postal service, serving in such capacities as mail handler and shop steward. Known for his keen attention to detail and respect for the field of law, Chester devoted countless hours to representing his colleagues through the grievance process. He also used his talents and skills in the area of insurance brokerage and volunteering as a voter election judge.
Chester was united in Holy matrimony to Constance J. Cook on January 23, 1999. During their leisure time and retirement, Chester and Connie enjoyed traveling, attending music festivals, and an occasional trip to casinos in the area. Outside of these interests, he enjoyed bowling, Cardinals baseball, and family gatherings. Chester was a devout member of the Masonic order, having served 40 years in various facets at John P. Parr Temple #8, in addition to Medinah Temple #39, Shrine, and Eureka Consistory #29.
Servant leadership was a governing principal by which Chester lived his life. Whether in professional or personal arenas, he lived for and enjoyed helping others. He could often be heard saying, 'God gives you His best, don't you think He deserves yours?' This was the mark that Chester strived for.
Chester leaves to cherish his memory: loving wife, Constance J. Closson; devoted sons Alan (Patricia) Closson and Edward (Janell) Closson; grandchildren Jaden, Camdyn, Gavin, and Zander Closson; step-children Darlene, Dale, and Diane Cook; step-grandchildren Darryl and Donald Cook, Darcell Johnson, Dale Cook, Jr., and Shanell Bolden; sister Lavada Johnson; sisters-in-law Macie Clossum, Jewel Charlot, and Joy Price; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will all miss him deeply.
