Dave Henderson, of Defiance, Missouri died at home on January 16, 2014. He was born in Bethany, MO on December12, 1956 to Dr. Gene and Bonnie Henderson. His mother, Bonnie, preceded Dave in death.
Dave held a PhD from the University of Missouri-Columbia in Medieval English Literature with a focus on 'Begging Poems'. Dave was a true '˜renaissance man'. His passions included reading, writing, music and education. He was a fierce advocate of everyone he knew as they furthered their education; truly believing education is never a waste. Dave never met a book he didn't enjoy. He loved reading a variety of genres and delighted in discussing books and current events. Dave enjoyed playing the guitar and listening to a wide range of music. Dave had such a wonderful command of the English language. He had just completed writing an amazing, thought-provoking novel.
Those left to honor Dave's life include his loving wife Colleen, beloved father Gene, brother Ben, and sisters Belinda and Jennifer. He was a cherished uncle to Ryan and Patrick McNeely, Alexandra Henderson and the many nieces and nephews on Colleen's side of the family. He was loved and respected by Colleen's mother, Florence Byrne and all Colleen's brothers, sisters and their spouses, as well as the many friends he made throughout his life. Family was very important to Dave and everyone depended upon his strength and sage advice. Dave was always there celebrating birthdays and graduations with everyone, wearing one of his many loved hats. He could wear anything from a beret to a fedora, to a cowboy hat. He looked great in them all, especially the top hat he wore at his wedding to Colleen.
Colleen and Dave found each other in mid life and each made the other complete. Colleen showed Dave the joy in traveling and introduced him to sports. Dave expanded Colleen's appreciation of literature and current events. Together they made a wonderful life together, along with their dog, Otis and cats, Ray and Morris, living in their woodland home. At home with Colleen and the animals, a glass of Jameson, a good book, Brubeck on the CD player, sitting in his big, comfortable chair was heaven to Dave.
A celebration of Dave's life will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014 from 1-5 p.m. at The American Legion Post #313, 200 Main St., St. Peters, MO. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Dave's name to the St. Charles County Library. If flowers are sent, it is requested they be sent to the Henderson home. In honor of Dave's love of hats, please wear your favorite hat to the celebration.
