Delmar “Del” G. Blodgett, of Saint Charles, MO, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2023, at the age of 97. Loving husband of the late Mary Blodgett; beloved son of the late Frank Daniel and Mary E. Blodgett; devoted father of Matthew (Lauren) Blodgett; cherished grandfather of Alex and Nicholas Blodgett; dear brother of Clare Kreid. Del is also preceded in death by his sister, Dorris Cies and brother, Daniel (Geraldine) Blodgett.
Del spent three years serving his country in the U.S. Navy and fought proudly at the tail-end of WWII where he was stationed on the U.S.S. Oregon City. After being discharged from the Navy in 1946, Del enrolled at the St. Louis School of Aeronautics where he learned his trade as an aircraft mechanic. Del went on to earn his private pilot’s license and continued his career as a light-aircraft pilot and mechanic. At the age of 62 he retired as a master mechanic for St. Charles Flying Service and was tapped by the FAA to work part-time as a federal aviation inspector and aeronautics instructor.
If Del had a theme to his life, it would be service. Del was always there for his friends and family with no sacrifice he wouldn’t make and no hand he wouldn’t lend. As a devoted father, Del took an active interest in all of his son’s activities and was quick to offer help with a last-minute school project, a Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby car or even a complete home remodel. As a provider, Del worked tirelessly to ensure his family could live a comfortable, safe, and joyous life. After retirement, Del spent many hours charting the Blodgett family history. He loved reviewing all of the old letters, documents and pictures from his bloodline’s rich history. Del was an avid sportsman who loved to hunt game birds with his buddies in the fields of Nebraska, but his real passion and love of nature came from fishing. Del and his wife Mary had a little fishing boat that they could tow behind almost any car. They loved to be out on the water and would often pick up on a moment’s notice and drive to the nearest lake when Del learned the fish were biting there. Delmar was dearly loved by everyone in his life and he will be greatly missed.
Memorials may be made in Delmar's name to the Alzheimer's Association and Central Institute for the Deaf.
