Denny Copeland peacefully transitioned with love, song, and prayer on November 16, 2024, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri. Denny is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy (Dottie) Copeland; his three children, Jeff Copeland, Tina Nelson, and Marcia Copeland Romero (Rick Romero); and his granddaughter, Emma Nelson. Brother to Rhonda Willis (Kent Willis), preceded in death by brother, James (Jim) Copeland, as well as a cherished brother-in-law, uncle, nephew, cousin, friend, and barber to many. Denny grew up in Belle, Missouri, where he shined as an athlete playing softball and basketball and was often cast as the musical lead in many of the school plays. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army. Serving in Fort Knox, KY from 1957- 1959. Denny moved to St Louis, where he met the love of his life, Dottie. They married and began a family. Denny began barbering in 1966 in O'Fallon, Missouri. He was the proprietor of Lindenwood Barbershop, Elm Street Barber Shop, and The Plaza Barbershop. Denny's barber chair was not just a place for haircuts—it was where stories were shared, laughs were plentiful, and friendships flourished.
Known for his love of country music, Denny was the lead singer of The Country Gentleman, a band he played in with his Uncle John and Uncle Verlyn Copeland. They performed at many Catholic picnics, VFW Halls, taverns, and weddings throughout St. Charles County during the 1970s-mid 1980s. He was happiest when he was onstage singing and strumming his guitar. He also enjoyed singing along to his favorite recording artists, which included Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Ray Price, Ronnie Milsap, Charlie Pride and Patsy Cline. His barbershop was home to many jam sessions, where local musicians played the steel guitar, fiddle, guitars, drums, and mandolin.
Denny's 15-year battle with Alzheimer's took his mobility and memories as he resided in two different Missouri Veterans Homes over the past ten years. His voice and love for music stayed with him through the end. It was a difficult journey, but now his family rejoices that he is finally at rest with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
A private graveside burial will take place at Baue Cave Springs Cemetery on Monday, December 16, at 11 a.m. The family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association in honor of Denny’s memory.
