Dolores Ellen “Dee” Gibbons

March 6, 1931 — February 11, 2021

Dolores Ellen “Dee” Gibbons, 89, of O’Fallon, Missouri passed away on February 11, 2021. The Superbowl was over, it was too cold to golf, so “Grandma Dee” decided it was time to move on.

Dee was born to parents, John Myer and Cecile Martin on March 6, 1931 in Libertyville, Illinois. She was a graduate of Lanphier High School, in Springfield, Illinois where she advanced and graduated at an accelerated pace. She married Donald Gibbons in Springfield on November 15, 1952 and they had two children; Donald Jr. in 1955 and J. Michael in 1958. She worked in various capacities for the State of Illinois, including the Governor’s Office in the state capitol building. From there she continued to work in government serving Illinois state senator, George Sangmeister.

There were so many hobbies that Dee enjoyed; bridge, golf, crossword puzzles, reading, painting, and poetry – so many pursuits that kept her always busy, always learning. She loved dogs, and you would find at least one dog living in her home at any given time. She was not one to sit idle.

After her husband Don retired from the Illinois State Police, Dee moved with him to Las Vegas in 1982. She immediately found an office position in the Sands Casino, and from there moved into the office of the Fitzgerald Casino general manager. Both her and Don loved the poker machines, and entertained many visitors during their years together in the desert.

Dee’s husband died in 1993, and not long after she was convinced by her daughter-in-law to move to O’Fallon, Missouri to be closer to family. She moved in 1996 to her new home on the golf course. Dee loved golf (she had 3 hole-in-ones) and she immediately helped organize and manage a women’s golf league in St. Peters, Missouri. She spent over two decades enjoying her family, friends and neighbors after her retirement.

Dolores is survived by Don & Tiz Gibbons, J. Michael & Susan Gibbons; grandchildren, Donald III (Stacy), Melissa (Mike) Fink, Brett, Blake, Mick and Amanda; and four great-grandchildren.

We are especially grateful for the care and support from all of the people at Garden View Care Center of O’Fallon. You helped care for our “Grandma Dee” during her last four years of life and we appreciate you.

A Graveside Service at St. Charles Memorial Gardens will be planned at a later date.
