Dorothy Murphy

November 25, 1920 — November 23, 2020

Dorothy Murphy (nee Hawkins), of Kirkwood, MO, passed away on Monday, November 23, 2020 at the age of 99. Beloved wife of the late Clarence Murphy; cherished daughter of the late Irl and Lillie Anderson-Hawkins and step-father Flenoy Akins; devoted mother of the late Ernestine Parker and Clarence Murphy, Jr.; Dorothy is also survived by several generations of grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and loved ones. Dorothy is preceded in death by her siblings, Walter Hawkins, John Akins, Willie Roy Akins, Franzetta Akins-Westbrooks, Emma Akins, Donzella Akins and Robert Lee Akins.

Dorothy attended Douglass School in Webster Groves, MO. Dorothy was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Brentwood Missouri. She was involved with the Annie Malone Children’s Home and numerous other civic and social organizations. For Dorothy the sky was the limit. She wore many hats and was the jack of all trades. She was known to be an entrepreneur, owning her own Murphy’s BBQ stand, and most notably Dot’s Record Shop, a pillar of the St. Louis community. Dorothy had a love for life. She enjoyed celebrating her birthday with family and friends, she even had a party on her 99th birthday. She loved singing, dancing, and music. On a trip to Las Vegas, Dorothy danced in the middle of the street, spreading joy to all who surrounded her. She never let family or friends go without, she was caring, and giving. Dorothy enjoyed traveling, and she could be found having a good time at the Casino slot machines. Dorothy was a Backstage Assistant for the "Charlotte Peters Show" on the former KSD-TV (KSDK) and she was the only African-American employee at the time and she was proud of this designation and took great pride in her work with Mrs. Peters.

Dorothy will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

Memorials may be made in Dorothy's name to Annie Malone Children and Family Services.
