Dorothy Y Ball

January 11, 1927 — January 1, 2016

Dorothy Yvonne Shoemaker Sherrill Ball, 88, formerly of St. Peters and Monroe City, MO, passed peacefully into the presence of her Savior shortly after midnight on January 1, 2016 at Brownsburg Meadows in Brownsburg, IN. She was a member of the St. Charles Christian Church.

Dorothy was born on January 11, 1927 to Emmet & Marie (Botkin) Shoemaker in Hannibal, MO. She attended Monroe City, MO Public Schools throughout her primary and secondary education, graduating from high school in 1944.

In 1947, while working as a bookkeeper for a car dealership in Beardstown, IL, she met and fell in love with Hal W. Sherrill. They were married on November 30, 1947 in Hannibal, MO and set up residence in Monroe City, MO. Their only child, Dennis Alan Sherrill, was born in Hannibal, MO on February 17, 1951.

Hal W. Sherrill died on November 25, 1953 of an infection after successful lung cancer surgery.

Though she was devastated, Dorothy went on alone to raise their son.

She graduated from Beauty School and operated a beauty salon in her home in Monroe City, MO. She later moved to the St. Louis, MO area and co-owned the Maridot beauty shop in Florissant, MO. Dorothy was a professional hairdresser for 37 years.

Dorothy worked at developing cordial hairdresser/client relationships with all her clients. One of those clients began to notice her in a special way and decided to ask her out. They enjoyed one another’s company so much that they decided to take the next step.

Dorothy married David H. Ball on August 1, 1982. They enjoyed over twenty years of life together in Hazelwood and St. Peters, MO, encouraging and supporting one another, traveling, and spending time with both families.

David H. Ball died on January 29, 2003 having lost his battle with lung cancer.

Again, Dorothy was devastated, but continued on alone. She filled her life, as she always had, by helping those around her: a neighbor who needed a friend was befriended; a good cause that needed a volunteer got one; and family always came first.

Dorothy was preceded in death by: her parents, Emmet & Marie (Botkin) Shoemaker; 2 husbands – Hall W. Sherrill and David H. Ball; 3 brothers – Emmet Jr., Robert, and William Shoemaker; 5 Sisters-in-law – Ada (Sherrill) Mitchell, Lois (Sherrill) Edwards, Emmie (Anderson) Shoemaker, Helen (Ball) Gaertner, and Patricia (Spalding) Shoemaker; 2 brothers-in-law – Lee Sherrill and Bennet Ball; 2 grandchildren – Joseph Corban Sherrill & Victory Sherrill; 1 step-grandchild – Kristine Ball.

Dorothy is survived by: 1 son – Dennis Alan (Michele) Sherrill; 3 step-children – Sharon (Gary) Rhodes, Sarge Ball, Jim (Sharon) Ball; 1 sister-in-law – Sargeena (Wesley) Reed;1 grandson – Stephen Loyle (Chelsea) Sherrill; 8 step-grandchildren – Jennifer (Rich) Chizmar, Zachary (Deanna) Rhodes, Shirlee Simonin-Pittman, Andrew Ball, Lauren Ball, Deven Ball, Austin Ball, Derrick Hedges; 2 step-great grandchildren – Talon Chizmar and Sydney Rhodes; and numerous nieces and nephews.
