Dr. Elmer Feldman

February 22, 1924 — November 30, 2014

Dr. Elmer Feldman was born at home in Midland Township, near George, Iowa on February 22, 1924. He spent his young years working on the family farm and attending a one room school house, nearby. He graduated from George High School in 1941.
After attending Aircraft Mechanics School in Omaha, Nebraska, he traveled to California and worked at North American Aviation plant until joining the Army Air Corp as a cadet in 1943. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
In 1951 he enrolled at the University of Iowa. He graduated in 1955 after completing coursework for pre-dental and dental school. He and his family moved to Knoxville, Iowa in September of 1955 where he established his dental practice. He practiced dentistry for twenty-nine years until his retirement in 1984. He lived in Knoxville until 2011, when he moved to chesterfield, Missouri to be closer to family.
He was a lifelong volunteer in his community. He served as a director on the Marion County Savings and Loan Board, was a life-time Paul Harris Fellow with the Rotary Club, was President of the Knoxville Dental Society, served on the Board of Trustees of the Knoxville Public Library, President of Marion County Hospice, served as a commissioner on the Airport and City Economic Commissions and was very active in the Knoxville Presbyterian Church. He and his wife, Betty, were driving forces in a fundraising effort to raise money to purchase defibrillators for the Knoxville Rescue Truck. In 1990, he received the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce Most Outstanding Citizen of the Year award. He said when he received the award, 'I have a deep and abiding interest in people (and) volunteering makes me feel younger than my years.' In his later years, he continued to serve as a role model for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, sharing with them his love of family, gardening, fishing, hunting, and teaching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren about the wonders the earth had to offer.
His life-long philosophy was threefold; be kind and considerate of others, work hard, and do whatever it takes. He lived these words every day of his long life.
His wife Betty, his wife, Mary, his parents and eight brothers and sisters preceded him in death. He is loved and remembered by his daughter, Laura, his daughter Lynn (Terry) Hollister, his stepdaughter Karen (Bill) Garrett, grandchildren Megan (Rich) Daniels, Kate (Steve) Engemann, Justin Hollister, Jordan Hollister, Angela Garrett, Ashley (Marcus) Mitchell, and five great-grandchildren.
Dr. E.V. Feldman is the truest example of a life well lived.
Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.
