Dr. Julius H. Johnson, Jr.

Thursday September 23, 2021, Julius H Johnson, Jr., Ph.D. loving husband and father of two children, passed away at the age of 78. Julius was born on July 24, 1943, in Wilmington, NC.

In 1961, he enlisted in the US Navy and served during the Vietnam War. He received an expeditionary medal and was Honorably Discharged in 1968.

After the Navy, he attended San Diego State University where he majored in Business Administration (with an emphasis in finance). After graduation he worked as a Security Analyst for Southern California First National Bank; concurrently he held a position of Financial Editor for the San Diego paper Voice & Viewpoint.

By 1975, Julius had found his way to Delaware Ohio, where he worked as a Manager of Equal Opportunity Affairs for the Flexible Corporation a transit vehicle manufacturer. The Flexible Corporation was acquired by Grumman in 1978. Julius would join the newly formed Grumman Flexible, he held the position of Manager of Community Affairs and Municipal Marketing. A position that required him to travel to meet various local and national transit authorities. In Delaware he met JoAnn Hoover, they got married in 1979, and remained happily married for the rest of his life.

In 1982, he transferred to Grumman International Corporation in Washington DC , where he served as special assistant for international operations. He worked with the US Congress (specifically the New York congressional delegation), the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Defense Department, the U.S. Commerce Department, trade associations and appropriate embassies in Washington DC to coordinate various international commercial and defense programs for the Grumman Corporation.

In 1987, he became the corporate manager of public policy and business economics at Grumman Corporation. He provided staff support for the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (along with other top management executives) of the Corporation to formulate strategies for managing public issues that supported congressional defense budget authorization proposals for Grumman defense aircraft programs (fighter: F-14 Tomcat, EA6 Prowler: electronic welfare and E2C: airborne early warning). Julius also received his Master’s in Business Administration from George Washington University in 1987.

In 1991, he was a lecturer in Business and Engineering Administration at George Washington University. He received his Doctorate from George Washington University the same year. After graduation, he became an Associate Professor of Strategic Management and International Business at the University of Missouri St. Louis where he remained until 2016. He also served as a Fellow in the Center for International Studies and International Business Institute.

In the summer of 1996 he was Visiting Professor of World Business, at Thunderbird University, The American Graduate School of International Management.

In 2006, he was appointed director of Business, Technology and Research Park at UMSL, home to Express Scripts.

His research articles appeared in a number of journals including the Journal of International Business Studies, the Journal of International Management, Business and Society, the Journal of Public Affairs, the Journal of Global Business, Global Focus, the Journal of Psychology and a 2003 edited book on China’s Access to the World Trade Organization with Hung-Gay Fung and Chang-Hong Pei.

Outside of work, Julius was a competitive tennis player and lover of all things tennis. A world traveler and culinary enthusiast. Julius was devoted to his family, a lifelong scholar, a lover of music, a great conversationalist and had a deep reverence for God. He will be sorely missed by those who knew him best. Julius will be honored by a private military funeral.

He is survived by his wife JoAnn, his two children, Julius III and Meredith, his sister Mrs. Catherine Hayes, his brother Dr. Joseph F. and Mrs. Rowena Johnson, nieces and nephews.
