Eileen Verona “Wink” Maher, 87, passed away Friday morning, April 13, 2018, after a short stay at Mount Carmel Rehabilitation Center in O'Fallon.
Born September 11, 1930, at home in Old Monroe, she was the daughter of Albert George and Theresa Elizabeth (Wehde) Burkemper.
Eileen attended Immaculate Conception School in Old Monroe and Troy Buchanan High School. She was united in marriage on April 11, 1953, at the Immaculate Conception Church to Orville Joseph “Ozzie” Maher and celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary this year. This union was blessed with four sons: Charles Maher & Sherry (Ohmes), Kevin Maher & Susan (Schellert), Douglas Maher & Grace (Schneider), Dennis “Pete” Maher & Brenda (Mueller).
Wink was a loving housewife and employed with Sisters of the Most Precious Blood Convent in O'Fallon for 27 years. She was a longtime member of Assumption Catholic Parish; member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Knights of Columbus Council 2269; member of the SSM St. Joseph Auxiliary; and member of the Historical Society of O’Fallon. She enjoyed breakfast and luncheon gatherings with her cousins, K of C ladies and the St. Paul girls. She was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals Fan.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Theresa Burkemper; four brothers, James "Jim" Burkemper, Jerome "Jerry" Burkemper, Alvin “Al” Burkemper and Delbert "Duck" Burkemper; three sisters, Mary Jane Burkemper, Mary Lou Creech and Alberta “Bert” Brown. Three brother-in-laws, Robert “Bob” Brown, Vincil Creech and Sylvester "Ves" Bauer.
In addition to her husband, sons and daughter-in-laws, survivors include 11 Grandchildren: Brian, Tony, Daniel, Chris, Casey, Michelle, Katie, Jeremy, Steven, Kelly, Becky; 17 Great-Grandchildren: Tatum, Molly, Max, Claire, Brooklyn, Anna, Whitton, William, Emmitt, David, Harper, Blake, Ben, Reese, Rhett, Luke, Matthew.
Wink also leaves one sister, Genevieve “Gen” Bauer, of St. Peters and two sisters-in-law: Dorothy “Dot” Burkemper, of O'Fallon, and Patsy “Pat” Burkemper, of Old Monroe; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
