Eugene “Gene” H. Vogelgesang of O’Fallon, MO, passed Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at the age of 88. Loving husband of 60 years to Dorothy R. Vogelgesang; beloved son of the late Eugene H. Sr. and Josephine Barbara Vogelgesang; devoted father of Diane (Don) Dueing, Marilyn (Dan) Ballmann, Tom (Gina nee: Battocletti) Vogelgesang, Virginia (Jeff) Nichols, and Robert (Shelley nee: Hart) Vogelgesang; cherished grandfather of Jennifer Ballmann, Jamie (fiancé Danny Connoyer) Ballmann, Scott Acres, Steve (Meghan) Acres, Aaron Vogelgesang (Taylor Gillispi); treasured great grandfather of Maverick Vogelgesang; dearest step-grandfather of Samantha (fiancé Jake Duke) Berindino, Christina Dueing, and LaRen (Jay) Phelps; and step-great-grandfather of Julia, Jake, Landen, Eli, Kole, Maddie, Kenzie, Mya, and Vayda; dear brother of Loretta (Hallie) Harke, Charles (Alice) Vogelgesang, and Ralph (Donna) Vogelgesang, brother-in-law of Mary Kay Vogelgesang and Sharon Vogelgesang. Eugene was also preceded in death by his siblings, Barbara (Andrew) Sommer, Sr. Barbara Jeanne Vogelgesang, C.P.P.S., Kenneth Vogelgesang, Richard Vogelgesang, and Leonard Vogelgesang.
Eugene proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He dedicated more than 28 years as the owner of his own trucking company Gene Vogelgesang Oil Distributor Inc. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic church since 1947, and a charter member of the St. Paul 3
rd Degree Knights of Columbus, and a 4
th Degree Blessed Philippine Duchesne Knights of Columbus Lifetime Honorary Member.
Eugene, known as “Gentle Gene” to his wife, loved to travel, and he and his wife visited all 50 states and Yugoslavia, Italy, and Mexico. He enjoyed the outdoors and mowing his lawn with his Dixie Chopper. He spent hours reading farm magazines and fuel oil magazines. But, above all else, he truly cherished his family and spending time with them. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
