Fred’s brother Ed, shares the following with all of our family and friends:

Dear Friends,

Twin brother Fred (Hondo) Kohorst passed away early this morning, peacefully in his sleep.

Fred had been in poor health following a broken hip and the onset of respiratory disease.

He was a big man in many ways both in size and talent. His size and athletic skills earned him a full basketball scholarship at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama.

That is where he was given the name “Hondo” as he loved the rough and tumble play under the boards.

He earned a degree in philosophy which he put to good use traveling the country in his cherished Volkswagen bus. Fred’s true passion was music and guitars.

He studied classical guitar with Manuel Lopez Ramos, a protégé of Andre Segovia. He went on to master the playing styles of James Taylor, Leo Kottke, Arlo Guthrie, Glen Campbell and Charlie Byrd.

His was an eclectic style that included his own compositions. He was also a teacher and mentor to me and our brother Joey, whom he now joins on that great band in the sky.

His good wife Joan, his beloved ‘doodle’ Bentley and all of his loving family and friends grieve today but know that all the tomorrows will be filled with beautiful memories.
