Gladys Phelps

August 6, 1923 — December 18, 2020

Gladys Phelps (nee Chapman), of Overland, MO, died on Friday, December 18, 2020 at the age of 97. Beloved wife of the late Phil Phelps (married October 9, 1943); precious daughter of the late William and Dona Chapman; loving mother of Brenda (the late Dennis) Durrwachter and Jerome (Siriporn) Phelps; devoted grandmother of Monica Combest, Joel (Jayme) Durrwachter, Pat Phelps Machate and Jerome (Nicole) Phelps, Jr.; dear great-grandmother of Lukas, Lanni, Blaise and John; loving great-great-grandmother of Aarilynn; cherished sister of Opal and the late Alta, Alfred, Lucille, Louise and William. Gladys was a beloved aunt, cousin and friend to many.

Gladys was born in Whitewater, MO, on August 6, 1923. Throughout her life, Gladys deeply loved her family and cherished the time that she was able to spend with them. People always described her as a genuinely “sweet” and loyal person. She enjoyed her time as a homemaker, but also worked outside of the home: during World War II, Gladys worked at the St. Louis Army Ammunition Plant and later worked at Emerson Electric. Gladys always had a positive attitude towards life and provided hope and encouragement to many while prioritizing the needs of others above her own. She enjoyed cooking, playing bingo at the VFW, traveling with her husband, cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals, playing cards, and spending time with friends. She was a long-time member of Marvin Park United Methodist Church.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff and caregivers at Glenfield Memory Care for their loving care, kindness, and compassion.

Memorial contributions may be made in Gladys’ honor to Chapel of the Cross Lutheran Church.
