Hazel Jean "Toots" Burkhalter Langenbach (nee Burkhalter), of Saint Louis, MO, passed away Saturday, October 28, 2023, at the age of 90. Loving wife of the late John Langenbach; beloved daughter of the late August and Clara Burkhalter; stepmother of Mary Jones; cherished aunt of Marvin, Vicki, Mark, Marlin, Denise, Barbara, Patty, and Douglas. Hazel is also preceded in death by her siblings Lucille Smith, Victor Burkhalter, Leon Burkhalter, and Donald Burkhalter; and her nephew, Michael.
Hazel was a vivacious and witty soul, brimming with life and an insatiable love for laughter. As a cherished wife, sister, and aunt, her adoration for her family was boundless. For most of her adult life, she called Washington, D.C. home, relishing in the city's vibrancy and energy. Her passion for singing found its outlet in the Pentagon’s choir and the church choir, where she was once called upon to sing a solo at the last minute. Hazel’s lifelong interest in politics was reflected in her years of employment at both the Pentagon and the Department of the Interior. Her leopard hat was an emblem of her fun-loving personality. Hazel was an irreplaceable presence in the lives of those who knew her, and her absence will be profoundly felt by all who were fortunate enough to share in her love and laughter.
Memorials may be made in Hazel's name to The Michael J. Fox Foundation and The Salvation Army.
