Lt. Colonel Herbert (Herb) Tulley Standing, 91 years, died peacefully at home, on February 6, 2021. He was born on January 14, 1930 in Buffalo, New York to Herbert Henry Standing and Gladys Alice Standing (nee Roberts), who both emigrated from England, to live in the United States in the late 1920’s.
He married Tusnelda (Nell) Mary Wandersee, of Owensille, MO on December 27, 1953. Herb and Nell had three sons, James, John, and Paul. They celebrated their 67
th wedding anniversary this past December of 2020.
Herb is a military veteran, serving 20 years in the United States Air Force. He enlisted in the Air Force after he graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1952, with a degree in Horiculture. Upon entering the Air Force, Herb graduated as an Aviation Cadet for the Air Force on December 15, 1953. During his time in Cadet Training, he was privileged to march in the Inauguration Parade with his class, for the Inauguration of President Eisenhower on Tuesday, January 20, 1953. Herb was a fighter pilot in the Air Force, who flew an ‘F-86 Fighter’ in the Korean War from 1954-1955. He also flew 100 missions in the ‘F-105 Fighter/Bomber’ in the Vietnam War from 1963-1964. After returning from the war, Herb became a Flight Instructor for the T33, F105, and F111 Fighter/Bomber, and additionally was a Simulator Instructor. He was Chief of Academics during this time. During his career he earned several medals; the ‘Air Medal’ and the ‘Distinguished Flying Cross’. He retired from the Air Force in 1973, at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
After his retirement from the military, Herb became a District Safety Engineer for the American Mutual Insurance Co., for 16 years. He was an active member of his church and sang in church choirs for over 58 years. Herb was also an adult Sunday School Teacher. After his retirement, Herb and Nell spent time traveling around the country, as well as visiting distant family. Herb had a passion for horiculture and designed and landscaped his own garden in a fashion similar to an English Cottage Garden.
Herb is survived by his wife, Tusnelda (Nell) Mary Standing (nee Wandersee), three married sons, James (Jerri), John (Polly), and Paul (Peggy); six grandchildren, Christina, Jennifer, Kimberly, David, Benjamin and Timothy; three step-grandchildren, Nichole, Brooke, and Jacob; five great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Cadie, Natalie, Caden, and Nella, and one step-great-grandchild, Austin. He was preceded in death by his brother Godfrey (Kip) and a grandson, Robert, who died as an infant.
Family will be present for Visitation, Thursday, February 11, from 1:30-2:30. Funeral and burial services will be private, for family only. In lieu of flowers, Memorials or Contributions may be made to
Wounded Warriors, or any other Veteran supported services.
