Howard Vincent Funck passed away peacefully at home on August 29th, 2018, surrounded by his loved ones, at the age of 80.
Howard was a musician, entertainer, director, business-owner, mechanic, motorcyclist, and candy-enthusiast. Most importantly, he was a doting Vincee who lived for his wife, daughters, and grandchildren. He will be remembered by his family for his orneriness, his work ethic, and his affinity for Pepsi-Cola.
After graduating from Beaumont High School, Howard went on to get a degree in Music Education from the St. Louis Institute of Music. He taught in several Missouri high schools, including Wyaconda High School, where he met his wife, Jean. Howard and Jean were married on June 2nd, 1963 and relocated to St. Charles, Missouri where they raised their two daughters, Julie and Greta. After learning the trade of instrument repair at McMurray Music in St. Louis, Howard began repairing instruments for St. Louis Public Schools. He started his own instrument repair shop out of the basement of his home, where it grew into Band Instrument Service Company, which was open for over 50 years.
Howard loved performing and played trumpet for many years with the Moolah Shriners’ Band, and the St. Charles Municipal Band, as well as with the bands he founded: Nostalgia Big Band and South Main Street Jazz Band. Howard touched so many people’s lives through music as an educator, repairman, and avid trumpeter. His family and friends remember the joy that music brought to his life and the joy that he brought to so many through music.
In addition to music, Howard had a burning passion for classic cars which he salvaged, restored, and showed-off by the dozens. His diligence and craftsmanship were known far and wide in the classic car community and brought his family enjoyment and frustration in equal measure.
Howard is survived by his loving wife, Jean; his daughters, Julie (Terry) McKellar and Greta (Phil) McRaven; and his four grandchildren: Hannah, Gavin, Sean, and Evelyn. His visitation will take place on his birthday: Sunday, September 2nd from 12-4, followed by a memorial service at 4. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) or Tempo of the Dog Rescue.
