Imogene Ruth Yankey

February 1, 1926 — November 21, 2013

Yankey, Imogene Ruth, of St. Peters, Missouri, died on Thursday, November 21, 2013 at the age of 87. Loving wife of the late Roy L. Yankey; beloved daughter of the late Herman L. and Della Mae Cox; devoted mother of Dale A. (Sondra Ewing) Yankey, Ronald L. (Kathy) Yankey, the late Donna Jean Yankey, Pamela (Mitchell) Garstang, Patricia (Francis "Gene") Hobbs, and Robert E. (Brenda) Yankey; cherished grandmother of 13; treasured great-grandmother of 31; dear great-great grandmother of 1; she is also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. She is preceded in death by her siblings Wanda Corse, Alma Corse, Dallas W. Cox, and her sister-in-law Josephine Lang.
Imogene Yankey began teaching in 1943 at age 16, she taught for three years, two years of which she served as 'principal' of a two room school. Mrs. Yankey then stopped teaching and had six children. In 1959 after moving to St. Charles, MO she began substituting in the St. CharlesSchool District, going to summer school and night class to acquire hours toward a Teaching Certificate.
In 1969, she took half a year off from teaching and obtained a BS Degree from LindenwoodCollege and is certified (Lifetime) to teach K-10th Grades.  She has 27.5 years of teaching experience most of which has been in the Ft. Zumwalt School District, plus 3 years she taught prior to 1946 (instigation of MO Retirement System).
Philosophy of Teaching: Mrs. Yankey had good rapport with her students and parents.  She was enthusiastic about her students and tried to make learning 'fun'. She realized that each child is unique and that each one can have success in several areas, if they are encouraged to try. She used praise often, but maintained good classroom control.
Professional Development: Having 5 small children at home, she continued caring for them and still pursued toward Teacher Certification. Since that time, Mrs. Yankey acquired additional hours towards a Master's Degree. However, illness forced her to forego this goal.  She gave help to others on the Professional staff, as well as cooperating well with other personnel in the Ft.ZumwaltSchool District. She served on several curriculum Development committees, and always tried to present a good public image for the Ft.ZumwaltSchool District. She continued to attend workshops given by the district.
Mrs. Yankey was a member of MNEA, a member of M.S.T.A. for twenty years, and was active as a volunteer worker for M.D., M.S., Lung Diseases, and Cancer. She was a charter member in the organization of two churches in St. Charles, MO, and served as choir director, organist and pianist for over forty years in several different churches. In addition to this, she taught Sunday School for many years. She and her husband were active in both the Boy and Girl Scouts Organizations when their children were young.  She believed that teachers should strive toward being professional in their lives and actions, as teachers are examples to their students.
Memorials may be made to Bogey Hills Baptist Church.
