Irma Marie Sandfort nee Vogel received her heavenly reward on Thursday, July 8, 2021.
She was born on May 4, 1941 in Perryville, MO to Edgar H. Vogel and Alice Vogel nee Mueller.
She was baptized as an infant and attended Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville, where she was also confirmed. She attended Immanuel Lutheran School through 8th grade and then graduated from Perryville High School.
Upon graduation from Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, IL, she accepted a call to Atonement Lutheran School in Metairie, LA where she was the 1st grade teacher and principal. She also served as the church organist for the growing congregation.
In 1967, she married Melvin Thomas Sandfort who also served at Atonement.
In 1970, Tom and Irma moved to Columbus, Indiana to serve as teachers at St. Peter’s Lutheran School. The couple adopted two children through Lutheran Child & Family Services, Kirk Sandfort and Sherri (Sandfort) Lindsey. The lived in Columbus for 46 years and made many wonderful friends.
Tom and Irma moved back to Tom’s childhood home in Missouri in 2013 to be closer to family.
Irma’s hobbies included gardening, teaching, and journaling. Irma loved attending Bible study and studying God’s word. Her greatest loves were her family and friends. She died peacefully at home with her husband at her side.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Alice Vogel.
Irma is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Tom Sandfort; her children, Kirk Sandfort and Sherri (Dennis) Lindsey; her grandchildren, Damerick, Oliver, and Willow; her sister, Shirley (the late Edwin) Pike; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
Memorial contributions in Irma’s name may be made to
Immanuel Lutheran School in St. Charles or to
Immanuel Lutheran School in Perryville.
