Irving D. Smith

Irving D. “Irv” Smith, 93, formerly of Medina, New York, died in his home Thursday, May 11, 2023, in Wentzville, Missouri. 

Irv was born December 13, 1929, in Medina, New York to Dwight and Alberta (nee Watts) Smith. He grew up on a 100-acre farm, where he learned about the great outdoors and became a true nature lover. He married Alice Knobeloch on April 30, 1960, at the Presbyterian Church in East St. Louis.   

Irv is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Alice Smith. He was a devoted dad to Sandra Smith and Scott (Sheila) Smith; cherished grandpa to Leah (Ryan) Hoefler and Tiara Smith; treasured great grandpa to Jayda Hoefler and Quentin Hoefler; and dear brother to Vivian (the late Robert) May. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Kenneth Smith.  

Irv graduated with a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and a master's degree from Purdue University. He retired from Doane Agricultural Service after 37 years as an editor. He was an elder at Dardenne Presbyterian Church for 45 years and Florissant Presbyterian for 16 years.  

As a veteran of the U.S. Army, Irv proudly served for two years while living in New York. Throughout his life he enjoyed woodworking and tending to nature. He loved to fish and went on many family vacations across the country, as well as visiting relatives every summer in New York.  

Irving was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Memorials may be made in his name to Disabled Veterans of America or Paralyzed Veterans or American Diabetes Association.
