James Henry Gnade

July 9, 1921 — April 9, 2016

Gnade, James Henry, of Elsberry, MO, died on Saturday evening, April 9, 2016, at the age of 94, at Mercy Hospital in Troy. Born July 9, 1921 in Old Monroe, he was the son of Herman and Rose Freise Gnade. He was united in marriage in St. Louis to Mae Laverne Prinster on April 30, 1958.

James was employed at McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis for many years. He served in the US Army from February, 1945 to December 1946, and during World War II he was one of five brothers all deployed at the same time.

James was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Old Monroe. He was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Rose Freise Gnade; his wife of 32 years Mae Laverne; four brothers: Frank Gnade who died in infancy, Richard Gnade who died as a young child, Gene Gnade of Iowa, John Gnade of Old Monroe; two sisters: Ann Hank of Montgomery City and Adele Anthony of Old Monroe.

Survivors include three brothers: William Gnade and wife Delores of Moscow Mills; Charles Gnade of Old Monroe, Ben Gnade and wife Ruthie of Moscow Mills; three sisters; Leona Schneider of O’Fallon, Rosemary Rottger and husband Everett of Troy, Jane Pieper and husband Leonard of Troy; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Much thanks to the Elsberry Health care center who took care of Jim for over 2 years.

James enjoyed gardening, he liked to cook. He played the banjo and harmonica, he was very thorough in the things he did. James was one of 13 children and a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Old Monroe.

Serving as pallbearers are his nephews: David Pieper, Bill Pieper, Mark Gnade, Ronald Rottger, Ken Gnade, and Luke Gnade.

Memorials may be Masses, or made to the Immaculate Conception Building Fund.
