He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, but spent his formative years growing up in Pine Lawn attending St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School, where he proudly sported the Blue and Gold.
An avid outdoorsman, Jerry was a former member of the Tailwalkers Bass Club and competed in numerous fishing tournaments throughout his life, garnering the moniker “Mr. Bass” during his competitive fishing heyday. Some of his fondest memories and friends were made during his time as a coach at the St. Charles Boys Club, coaching from 1978 – 1994. He worked with the club’s accomplished wrestling program which won numerous state championships during this time. Jerry also coached football at the Boys Club. Jerry, or Coach Hickey to many, had a passion for working with young people, serving as a mentor and role model to many young athletes in St. Charles. His time spent at the Boys Club served as a great source of pride.
A retired carpenter, Jerry spent most of his professional life working for the Cinco Construction Company, where he was superintendent for many years. A hardworking and dedicated family man, he always found time for family and friends.
During his retirement years, Jerry spent time fishing and hunting with his close friends. He enjoyed visits to the lake and spending time with his family. He served as his grandkids biggest fan, often attending their numerous sporting endeavors. A passionate fan of the sport of wrestling, Jerry was a fixture at GAC wrestling events.
His was a life well-lived.
In lieu of flowers the family is accepting donations for the Jerry Hickey Memorial Scholarship to be presented to a graduating St. Charles County wrestler with plans of attending either a traditional college or trade school. The scholarship award winner will be selected on the values most visible in and admired by Jerry: Work Ethic, Character, Toughness and Humility.
