Jerome “Jerry” T. Welter, 81, of Kerkhoven, Minnesota died Sunday, February 16, 2025 at Meramec Bluffs in Ballwin, Missouri. He was born in Crookston, Minnesota to the late Hilarion “Doc” and Lauretta Welter on September 19, 1943. Devoted husband of the late LaVonne Welter, loving father of Stacy (Wayne) Steele, Lisa Welter and Mark (Ann) Welter; proud grandfather of five very loved grandchildren: Kathryn Eckert (Tyler), Marissa Steele, Emma Welter, Ben Welter and David Steele; dear brother of Mona (Ron) Heglin and the late Joyce Habben; brother-in-law to Karen Thein; and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Jerry, born and raised in Crookston, was always a hard worker and dedicated community member. He attended St. John’s University after high school, devoted himself to the National Guard and served on the Crookston Fire Department. He briefly worked for International Harvester before beginning his career with Otter Tail Power Company where he worked for over 36 years.
On August 20, 1966, he married his beloved wife, LaVonne (Thein) Welter. Together they lived in Crookston, Minnesota, Red Lake Falls, Minnesota, and Enderlin, North Dakota; before settling down in Kerkhoven, Minnesota to raise their family. Family was most important to him. The love and life he and LaVonne built together is evident in his children and grandchildren and the love they share.
Jerry also found joy in the outdoors fishing and hunting. One of his favorite spots was at their cabin on the lake. He was a great mentor and had the patience to offer guidance while coaching hockey; something he excelled at himself. He had spent time as a young adult playing semi-pro hockey for his local team in Crookston. Jerry liked the camaraderie of playing billiards and cards with his friends. He took great pride in decorating their home for Christmas….. with strong encouragement from LaVonne!
He will always be remembered for his love of woodworking and the ability to fix anything. The sound of Johnny Cash and George Jones on the radio while the buzz of tools filled the home as he crafted many cherished pieces of furniture is forever etched in the minds of those who love him most.
Jerry was a man of faith and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, March 8, 2025 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Murdock, Minnesota with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in St. Clara Catholic Cemetery following the ceremony.
