John Hemming Anderson of St. Peters, Missouri, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at the age of 93.
John was born on September 8, 1930, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Hemming Christian and Zora May (Horn) Anderson. After graduating from Beaumont High School in 1949, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served during the Korean War as a machinery repairman first class on board the U.S.S. Kermit Roosevelt and U.S.S. Ajax. He later served in the United States Air Force Reserves. After his miliary service, John worked at Monsanto/M.E.M.C., in O’Fallon, Missouri, as a mechanical maintenance technician until his retirement.
John married Gloria Mae Lindemann in 1970, and they shared 54 years together before her death in January 2024. John and Gloria were members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in O'Fallon, Missouri, and much of their life centered around the church. They especially enjoyed participating in Holy Cross's "Just Older Youth" (JOY) group, and each year they helped decorate the church for Christmas. In their later years, John tenderly cared for Gloria as she struggled with dementia.
John was an avid hunter, skilled marksman, and fisherman. He and Gloria both enjoyed camping and canoeing and frequently vacationed in nearby Missouri State Parks. He regularly “found” discarded machines and equipment and restored them to perfect working condition. John also had a fondness for young children; he often set a goal for “Hi, John!” to be among a toddler’s first words. Many of his nieces and nephews affectionately referred to him as “Uncle Boogie.”
John is survived by his daughter, A. Kay Anderson, of Milledgeville, Georgia; sister-in-law, Carol Dennett of Plano, Texas; as well as many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his sisters, Mabel Johnson, Dorothy “Andi” Niemeyer, Clara Crutchfield, and Vera “Lee” Raka and their spouses; his brother Walter “Ray” Anderson and his wife; and his brother-in-law Robert “Bob” Dennett.
For the past two years, John was a resident of the Villages of St. Peters Assisted Living and Nursing Care facilities. The family extends their sincerest thanks to the Villages’ staff for their excellent care and assistance during that time.
