John Zumwalt II, born March 25, 1944, to Eva Marie and the late John Paul Zumwalt Sr., died November 11th at his residence. He is survived by his wife, Gail; sons and daughters-in-law, Garrett A. (Diane), and John Paul Zumwalt III (Michelle); grandchildren, Ayla Marie, Nicholas P. and Jake A. Zumwalt; sisters and brothers-in-law, Judy Zalinski (Gary) and Penny Lau (Gale), and brother and sister-in-law, Brad Zumwalt (Edie). John served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He began his career in law enforcement on February 10, 1975, when he joined the St. Charles City Police Department, as a police officer. His career covered a span of 25 years as police officer, detective, and community relations officer, Commander in the Criminal Investigations Bureau, Police Captain and Acting Chief of Police. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1979 and Lieutenant in 1983 holding that rank until his retirement in 1999. Among his many accomplishments are numerous letters of commendation throughout his career with the Department. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of St. Charles and Member of St. Charles VFW Post #2866. John Zumwalt was a loving uncle and friend to many.
