Lawrence (Larry) J. Wittman passed away on May 22, 2015 at the age of 70, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. His presence is truly missed and his life deeply appreciated by a wealth of friends and family. Larry was the beloved husband of Jeanine (nee Scrivner) Wittman; proud father of Michael Wittman of Chicago, Illinois and Melissa (Matt) Turner of Brookfield, Wisconsin; loving and adored grandfather of Matthew (8), Annalise (7) and Joshua (5) Turner; "little" brother of Joan (Bob) Hicks of Merritt Island, Florida and the late Robert 'Bob' Wittman of Fairdealing, Kentucky; and uncle to many cherished nieces and nephews.
Born on July 11, 1944 to the late Joseph and Ann Wittman, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Larry attended the University of Illinois where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering. He obtained his Professional Engineering License in the State of Wisconsin (but remained a lifelong fan of the Fighting Illini).
Being an engineer was a dream job for Larry and he enjoyed this work until his passing, employed first by Allis Chalmers (West Allis, Wisconsin); and subsequently Louis Allis (also in West Allis) and Magnetek, Emerson Electric Motor Corporation and Nidec Motor Corporation (in St. Louis, Missouri).
Larry's hobbies included bowling and fishing... he loved dogs and pursued his interests in breeding, confirmation, and agility-working with beagles and whippets. Larry believed in the importance of giving back, so when he wasn't spoiling his grandchildren, he spent much time mentoring younger engineers, working with rescued animals and volunteering through Junior Achievement. Larry was also a member of the Emerson Engineer's Club, SAE, and was a past board member of the Vibrations Institute of St. Louis.
As it is nearly impossible to capture the sum of his spirit on paper, we hope you will join us for a Celebration of Larry's Life on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at Olivette Lanes, (where Larry bowled for many years.) located at 9520 Olive Boulevard, Olivette, Missouri, 63132, (314) 991-0365, from 10:30am-1:00pm. Toasts and words of remembrance from family and friends will take place from 11:00am-12:00pm.
Friends and family are also invited to join us on Saturday, September 5, 2015 at Frontier Park, St. Charles, Missouri, for the Lustgarten Foundation's Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk. Jeanine has set-up team 'Wittman Sampler' in Larry's honor to support others affected by this terrible disease.
