Early on the morning of January 27, 2021, Margaret “Peggy” Mary Hinrichs (nee Auer) passed away at the age of 66, surrounded by her husband and three children, after bravely fighting anaplastic thyroid cancer for two years.
Peggy was born on January 24, 1955, in St. Louis Missouri, and spent her childhood surrounded by her parents, six siblings, and the loving community of the Catholic church. As a young woman, Peggy met the love of her life, Edwin Hinrichs, while working together at First Union Bancorporation. During their 42 years of marriage, Ed and Peggy raised three wonderful children, Douglas Hinrichs (Deborah Dahl-Hinrichs), Bryan Hinrichs (Tracey), and Kathryn Sanders (Clayton). They traveled often, were involved in their schools, churches, and communities, and had countless adventures together.
Although Peggy worked for many years in banking and school food service, her real calling in life was to be a grandmother. Her four grandchildren, Rosalie Hinrichs, Captilles Hinrichs, William Sanders, and Zita Sanders, were the light of her life. Instead of taking it easy during retirement, Peggy worked tirelessly to make her grandkids smile by any means possible, from giving them large amounts of ice cream to always keeping markers and stickers in her purse for an impromptu game of tic-tac-toe.
Peggy was an amazing cook specializing in carrot cake and Christmas cookies. She was a merciless opponent in card and board games, specializing in Liverpool rummy. She was a devoted Blues fan who demanded that the game be turned on even in her last hours of life. She was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, godmother, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who continually put others’ needs before her own. She was devoutly faithful to Our Lord, Jesus Christ, who helped her through even the worst moments of battling cancer. Peggy was an angel sent to this earth to make life more joyful, and her legacy of kindness, love, and faith will never be forgotten.
Peggy’s life will be celebrated with a memorial Mass at 10 am on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis (4431 Lindell Boulevard). Please wear a mask and practice social distancing.
