Marmie D. Bates, of O’Fallon, MO, passed away Saturday, January 15, 2022 at the age of 98. Loving husband of the late Velma Bates; beloved son of the late Austin and Bessie Bates; devoted father of Sharon (Ken) Busselman; cherished grandfather of Steve (Linda) Busselman, Trish (Pat) Tygett, Scott (Michelle) Williams, and Melissa (Denise) Muskopf; treasured great grandfather of Scotty, Ali, Nason, Joe and Payton; great-great grandfather of two; and is also survived by many, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Marmie is also preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Williams; siblings, Otto, Cletis, Frank, Paul, Roscoe, Carl, Dorothy, Opal and Ruby; and great-granddaughter, Sarah.

Marmie was married to Velma, the love of his life, for a loving 72½ years. Marmie proudly served his country in the United States Navy in World War II. He was a meat cutter and a member of Local 88 Meat Cutters Union. Marmie was a member of Freewill Baptist Church. Marmie and Velma loved to do everything together. They loved to dance, fish and play cards. Marmie was avid Cardinal fan and loved to watch them play. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Memorials may be made in Marmie's name to the Wounded Warrior Project.
