Marvin Meyer

May 13, 1925 — October 20, 2013

Meyer, Marvin H., of St. Charles, Missouri, died on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at the age of 88. Loving husband of Gloria A. Meyer (nee: Rahn); beloved son of the late Theodore and Alma Meyer; devoted father of Susan (Mark) Stewart and Catherine (Robert) Sweany; cherished grandfather of Andrea Pennington, Sean Sweany, Mark Sweany and the late David Pennington. He is preceded in death by his brother Robert Meyer and sister Lucille Steinhoff. He was a member of St. Johns Dartball League for 60 years. He enjoyed gardening, traveling with his wife in their motor home, overseeing farm operations and spending time with his grandkids.
In 1962, Marvin read about a new, experimental sweet corn hybrid developed by the University of Illinois called Illini Super Sweet. He managed to obtain some of the seed before it was commercially available, and never grew plain old sweet corn again! He was very proud of his sweet corn! Now, over 50 years later, almost all sweet corn grown and sold in the country is a result of this research.
Currently, the Missouri University Bradford Research Center (Bradford Farm) grows 24 or more different sweet corn hybrids. For the past several years they have had an 'in-house' taste test. This attracts approximately 200 each year and they put the results on their web site. What is really missing is that the general public has not had a chance to participate in this tasting. One avenue would be through local Farmer's Markets and possibly the Missouri State Fair. For the past three years there was a similar tomato taste test at the Missouri State Fair and it was very successful. Memorial Funds in the name of Marvin Meyer will support the expansion and promotion of sweet corn hybrids at MU's Bradford Research Center. His name would be attached to these events.
