Beloved husband of Frances Washington; loving father of Melva (Ronald) Copes; dear brother of the late Booker T., and Byrd Leo Washington, Marie (James) Clinton, John W., Emett, Alvin, Rosa Bell Washington and Birdiana Moore; grandfather of Ronald (Juanita) Copes and Rodney Copes; great grandfather of Ronnelle Anani Copes and Brieona Braeske. Mr. Washington was a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Trustee and Steward Board St. John A.M.E., distinguished past president and life member of St. Charles Optimist, trustee for Missouri Conference of St. John A.M.E, 2001 Citizen of the Year Award Recipient and former member of the Missouri Human Rights Commission. His career in education began at Franklin School as a teacher and coach and eventually principal before integration. At the beginning of integration he became an adult supervisor of the St. Charles School System. He taught math for ten years at St. Charles High School. He then went to Hardin Middle School as assistant prin-cipal. From Hardin he went to Jefferson Middle School as principal and toward the end of his career he was asked to be interim superintendent of the St. Charles School District. He then returned to Jefferson Middle School until his retirement. He was elected as a board member of the St. Charles School District for two terms.
