Norbert Wapelhorst

December 28, 1914 — July 20, 2010

Wapelhorst, Norbert F., of St. Charles, Missouri, died on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at the age of 95. Loving husband of the late Virginia C. Wapelhorst (nee: Sullentrop) and dear son of the late Frank and Margaret Wappelhorst. Norb is survived by his children Gloria (Les) Schierding and Thomas (Cheryl) Wapelhorst; grandchildren, Teresa Wapelhorst, Jennifer (David) Sisom, Christopher Wapelhorst, Michael (Erin) Wapelhorst, Thomas J. Wapelhorst, Daniel Wapelhorst, and Jeffrey Wapelhorst; great-grandchildren Dylan Wright, Katherine Sisom, Matthew Sisom, Blakely Wapelhorst, and Thomas J. Wapelhorst, Jr.; and his siblings Madeline Wappelhorst, Wilfred Wappelhorst, and sister-in-law Jeanette Wappelhorst. He is preceded in death by his daughter Mary Kay Wapelhorst and brother Herbert Wappelhorst. Norb was one of the founders of the Saint Charles Park and Recreation Foundation. He served in various positions on this board including President. Since retiring from the field after 42 years of service, Norb has continued to support local parks and recreation endeavors. He served on the following Park Issue/Election Campaigns: 1983 Park Tax increase, 1984 G.O. Bond Issue, 1988 Capital Improvement Sales Tax (with some park improvement implications), 1991 No Tax G.O. Bond Issue, 1995 No Tax G.O. Bond Issue, and in 2001 Proposition P - a Charter Amendment - affirming that a Resident Member Administrative Park Board would continue managing the Parks and Recreation Department. In addition, Norb's lifetime of professionalism has been well documented through his involvement in various groups and organizations. Some examples include the St. Charles Chapter American Red Cross - Chair of First Aid and Water Safety, Boy Scouts of America District Commissioner - Boone Trails Council, Lay Deanery Chairman- St. Charles Deanery, Archdiocese of St. Louis Development Appeal, Private Industry Council Officer of Employment and Training, Board Member - Junior Baseball and Softball Association of Council Board and Board of Directors - St. Charles Chamber of Commerce, St. Charles County Economic Development Council, President of the Crossroads Economic Corporation, and Board Member of the St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Board. Norb was also recognized by the Knights of Columbus - 1968 as the Knight of the Year and he received the Chamber of Commerce - Citizen of the Year Award in 1981. Memorials may be made to Duschene High School, St. Charles Park and Recreation Foundation, St. Vincents DePaul, or St. Peters Catholic Church.
