Norman Ernest Utlaut, of Saint Charles, MO, passed away Monday, November 20, 2023, at the age of 96. Beloved husband of the late Dorothy (Eickhoff) Utlaut; cherished son of the late Ernest and Minnie (Stutenkemper) Utlaut; devoted father of Ronald (the late Judy) Utlaut, Norman (Janet) Utlaut Jr. and Sarah (Richard) Sneider, and loving grandfather of Kelly Amienne (Daniel Foster), Ron (Heather), Mike (Courtney), and Michelle Utlaut, and Jason (Janna) Utlaut, Jessica Jones, and Ryan (Abigail) and Mason Flanagan; treasured great-grandfather of Oona, Lillian, Eleanor, Marisa, William, Carlie, McKenna, AnnaBelle, Chase, and Ernest. He is preceded in death by two daughters, Susan McGraw and Sandra Utlaut.
Norman grew up in Chamois, Missouri. He and Dot were married at St. James UCC in Morrison, MO April 3, 1948. All his life he remained deeply tied to his rural Missouri roots and helped each generation keep that connection. He took his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to fish, hunt, and join in family reunions. In his final summer, he shared the annual July 4th St. James UCC fried chicken and ice cream event with his caregiver, Maria and family, wanting to see all his special places one more time.
Flight was a lifelong fascination of Norman. He proudly served in the United States Air Force (Army Air Corp) during WWII before dedicating 38 years to McDonnell-Douglas as a machinist. He enjoyed taking the family to watch planes take off at Lambert Airport and was proud that his work helped put the first men on the moon. He was happy to participate in the Honor Flight for veterans.
When not at work, he loved gardening and woodworking. Neighbors enjoyed his seasonal displays, especially his irises, peonies, lilies and mums. Through summer and fall, he gifted his glut of zucchini, beans, peppers, or tomatoes to many others. He will live on through the creations he made for each family member, whether the manger scenes he handcrafted or the antique furniture he repaired.
He was so proud to be married to Dot for 62 years and had missed her dearly since her death in 2010. Norm and Dot were charter members of Good Shepherd United Church of Christ in St. Charles, MO and both served as Church Council Chair for several years. Norm was also proud to be a member of the Freemason Chamois Lodge #185 since 1955.
The family wishes to thank all his caregivers and health-care workers. Visiting Nurse Association of St. Louis provided palliative care and Hospice Care for the last years of Norman’s Life. Norman was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Norman's family is inviting everyone to join in for food and fellowship at St. John's United Church of Christ, at 405 S 5th St., St. Charles, MO 63301, following the service.
