Orville “Ozzie” Joseph Maher

Orville “Ozzie” Joseph Maher, 96, passed away Sunday, April 26, 2020, after a short illness at SSM Health St. Joseph West Hospital, Lake St. Louis, MO.

Born March 30, 1924, at home, in O’Fallon, Missouri, he was the son of Edgar Anthony Maher and Katherine “Kate” Mary Tochtrop.

Orville attended Assumption grade & high school and attended St. Louis University. He was united in marriage on April 11, 1953, at the Immaculate Conception Church, Old Monroe, Missouri, to Eileen “Wink” Burkemper. This union was blessed with four sons: Charles Maher & Sherri (Ohmes); Kevin Maher & Sue (Schellert); Douglas Maher & Grace (Schneider); Dennis Maher & Brenda (Mueller)

Oz was a loving husband and father. His 35 year career with Bank of O’Fallon, Boatman’s Bancshares and Bank of America ended with his retirement in 1989. He served his country in World War II from 1944 to 1946 and honorably discharged. Ozzie was very committed to his community and an active civic member, including:

  • O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce President

  • O’Fallon City Treasurer & City Clerk

  • Sisters of the Most Precious Blood Development Board

  • Assumption Catholic Parish and choir member

  • Lifetime member Knights of Columbus Council 2269

    • Fourth Degree member of St. Charles Assembly



  • SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital volunteer

  • Historical Society member; Fire Department Volunteer

  • Meals on Wheels volunteer

  • Kiwanis & Rotary officer and member

  • American Legion Post 388

  • He loved Cardinal baseball and his lifetime included all 11 St. Louis Cardinals World Series Championships and all 19 National League Pennant seasons


He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Eileen, by his parents, Edgar and Kate Maher; two brothers, Clement “Clem” and Charles (infant); three sisters, Irene Dix, Sister Catherine Marie CPPS (Virginia) and Sister Mary Edgar CPPS (Geraldine).

In addition to his sons and daughters-in-law, survivors include 11 Grandchildren: Brian, Tony, Daniel, Chris, Casey, Michelle, Katie, Jeremy, Steven, Kelly, Becky; 18 Great-Grandchildren: Tatum, Molly, Max, Claire, Brooklyn, Anna, Whitton, William, Emmitt, David, Harper, Blake, Ben, Reese, Rhett, Luke, Matthew, Noah.

Oz also leaves three sisters-in-law, Genevieve “Gen” Bauer, of St. Peters, Dorothy “Dot” Burkemper, of O'Fallon, and Patricia “Pat” Maher of Delray Beach FL; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Private family service and burial. A memorial Mass and reception will be scheduled in the future. Memorials to Meals on Wheels or Masses.
