In memory of Otto Sohn.
Otto Robert Sohn was born November 1, 1921 in Robertsville, Mo to Fred and Eva Lena Sohn. He departed this life on Monday, August 20, 2018 in St. Charles, MO.
At the age of three, his family moved to St. Clair, MO by horse and buggy where he grew up on a farm doing all the things a farm boy does – including walking 2 miles to school uphill both ways (as he told the story).
In October 1942, Uncle Sam called him to serve in World War II and he was on his way to North Africa, Sicily, England, Omaha Beach in France and finally to Germany during the Normandy Invasion. He was back in the states in 1945 and soon after met Ethel Willcox. They were married June 22, 1946. They have two very special children Diana K. and Larry R. Sohn.
Uncle Sam called him once more to serve in the Korean War. In October 1950, he was headed to Korea. He was wounded while serving our country and was awarded the Purple Heart. After a year in Tokyo’s Hospital, he was back in the states and was honorably discharged. He resumed his job at the Ford Plant and worked there from 1948 and retired in 1979.
He was never one to do nothing, so after he retired he worked several different jobs and enjoyed doing each one.
Otto was number 9 in the line of 12 children and still has one living brother, Kenneth L. Sohn of Washington, MO. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, 5 sisters, and 5 brothers, also a nephew Ray Sohn.
He is survived by his children Diana (Danny) DeLong of Winfield, MO, and Larry (Judy) Sohn of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his grandchildren: Sheri Harris, Genie (Scott) Meadows, Shawn (Rachel) Harris, Dawn Smith, Jon (Rachel) DeLong, Brittany (Chris) Holst and Brandt Sohn; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He also raised two special nephews Ray and Gene Sohn. He also loved all his nephews, nieces, family, and friends.
He was a wonderful, loving husband, father, grandfather, and provider and he will be terribly missed.
Otto enjoyed working in his yard and still could be found on the ladder trimming trees at the very young age of 91. I’m sure if we could see him now, he would be in God’s beautiful garden, carrying his trimmers, looking for a ladder so he could trim the apple trees there.
