Our beloved tiny, vivacious matriarch warrior mother, 'granny', sister, aunt, friend, Ramona Cortez Cosby (née Gallegos), has found peace after her 5 year battle with cancer, on November 28, 2017 in St Louis, Missouri.
Mona was born in Montrose, Colorado in 1935 to Epimenio and Arsenia Gallegos. After serving in the United States Air Force, she fulfilled her childhood dream and became a very talented and loved beautician for 66 years. She lived consequential years of her life in Ogden and Salt Lake City, UT, Seville, Spain, each where she operated her successful beauty shop, “Mona's Beauty Nook”.
Mona was loved by a great many people from all walks of life. She lived true to her Christian convictions. She always lent a helping hand, and no matter the adversity, she pushed through with unending determination, strength and grace. Despite many hardships, she carried herself with sincere friendship, innocence and good humor. She did have a few vices, such as shopping (particularly thrift stores) shoes, ice cream, and her grandkids. Mona greatly enjoyed watching and talking sports, especially the Utah Jazz and St. Louis Cardinals. Mona will be remembered for being a generous, and selfless person who always put her family and friends first.
Mona is survived by her children: Laura Daveen (John) Armocida, David (Sandy) Cortez, and Daren Cortez; ‘Granny’ of Vince, Amber, Alissa, Josh, Megan, Trevor, Maxx, and Emma; and 7 beautiful great-grandchildren, her siblings Pete, Dan, Viola, Elena, Susie and her faithful 4-legged companion, Missy. Preceded in death by her mother, father and brother Albert.
May your legacy be apparent by the good deeds of your successors. We will miss your red hair and freckled smile that brightened every room it entered. Your spirit shines bright forever in our hearts.
Mom has chosen to ‘give back’ by donating her body to USUHS, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, the federal medical school where her grandson graduated.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the VA and their Palliative Care team.
A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
