Richard “Dick” Shaiper, 86, a native St. Louisan, passed from the loving company of his entire family into the welcoming arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 16
th. Known for his love of golf, he began his career at the age of 9 as a caddy at Algonquin C.C. Later, after attending Washington University and serving two years in the Army, he returned to St. Louis and began his professional career. He proudly worked as a P.G.A. Head Professional at Glen Echo C.C., Norwood Hills C.C., Whitmoor C.C., and the Missouri Bluffs G.C.. He served as the Executive Director of the Gateway Section of the P.G.A. from 2003 - 2006. He felt that his greatest contribution was the creation of charity golf events through which he helped raise over $70,000,000 for local charities. Though golf was both his enjoyment and livelihood, he was a man of many interests.
Dick introduced all of his children and many of his grandchildren to the love of hunting and fishing. That love continues! He learned to ski when he was 55 and spent memorable time with family and friends on the slopes of Colorado. He was also an avid baseball and hockey fan, a passion he passed on to the next two generations. After his retirement, Dick and his wife, Gay, enjoyed spending winters in Florida where they golfed, played bridge and dominoes, and relaxed with frequent guests. Dick also loved to travel and especially enjoyed European river cruises, summer trips to Montana, and the family’s annual trip to trout fish.
However, Dick’s first love was his family. He was the most loving husband, a proud and very understanding father, an ideal grandfather who was both a mentor and encourager, and a man who played both Barbie and trucks with his great grandchildren. He was never too busy to listen, to offer advice while smoking his cigar, or just share his seemingly endless repertoire of stories and jokes.
Dick was the epitome of a gentleman who treated everyone with respect and kindness. Those whose lives were in some way touched by him will miss him. Those of us who loved him so very much will keep him forever in our hearts.
Memorial contributions in Dick’s name may be made to the
Golf Foundation of Missouri.
