Rick Bates, of Saint Charles, MO, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at the age of 65. Beloved husband of Joan Mary Bates; cherished son of the late Martin and Darlene Bates; devoted father of Nathaniel Richard (Elizabeth) Bates and Ian Michael (Jessica) Bates; loving grandfather of Penelope Bates, Felix Bates, Margaret Bates and Henry Bates; dear brother of Margaret Bates, Anna Gall and the late Stephen Bates.
Rick Bates, a gifted writer and passionate historian, passed away surrounded by his loving family. He was deeply engaged in the craft of storytelling and was in the midst of writing a book about the Lewis and Clark Expedition, a testament to his lifelong love of learning and history.
Rick’s appreciation for literature was evident in both his reading and writing, and he took great joy in sharing this passion with his grandchildren, fostering their love of books. He loved sharing his knowledge with his students during his 20+ years of teaching. A devoted Catholic and longtime member of St. Cletus Catholic Church, Rick lived a life of faith and purpose.
Breakfast was his favorite meal of the day, but he was known to savor a good meal at any time. He adored his family, cherishing the 41 beautiful years he shared with his beloved wife. Together, they enjoyed traveling the world, with Mexico holding a special place in their hearts.
Rick found joy in the outdoors, where he delighted in hunting for fossils and mushrooms, a hobby he loved sharing with his sons. He had a remarkable talent for finding treasures in nature and in life.
Rick was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His legacy of curiosity, devotion, and love for his family and the written word will continue to inspire those who were blessed to know him.
Memorials may be made in Martin's name to Birthright, Unbound, and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
