He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Benjamin Geret Gossow and his mother, Marie Moerschel Gossow. He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Canty Gossow, and his children: Ellen (John) Lockhart of Phoenix, AZ; Douglas Gossow of St. Louis, MO; Amy Gossow (Kimber) Van Ry of Brooklyn, NY and daughter in law Jennifer Gossow of St. Louis, MO. He was called “Bobby” by his grandchildren, all of whom survive him: Kate (Derek) Jones, Olivia Lockhart, Charlotte Lockhart, Benjamin Geret Gossow, Cecilia Gossow, Josephine Gossow, Sterling Huck Van Ry and Jules Van Ry; and his great grand-daughter, Nina Moon Jones. Robert and Barbara were married November 14, 1959 in St. Charles, MO. Their home in St. Charles and family were the center of their lives together, and they shared many special events and trips, including the marriage of their first-born grand-daughter Kate to Derek Jones in Ouray, CO in 2019.
Robert graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia, and served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1952-54. In addition to home and family, his loves included gardening, classical music and opera. He had a beautiful tenor singing voice, and was a member of the St. Charles Choral Society. He enjoyed tennis, making up German phrases, storytelling, and reminiscing about his family’s deep roots in St. Charles. He loved spending time with family and friends on trips to Colorado and Minnesota.
Robert’s proudest accomplishments included his children and grandchildren who care for and support one another, who care about others, and are active in their communities.
Robert was the kindest man we ever knew, and showed great affection for all those he encountered. Even as dementia reduced his memory and as the pandemic limited his visitors, he had a warm smile and a wink for all who cared for him. His gentle spirit stayed with him through his final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests his memory be honored with memorials to Trinity Episcopal Church, 318 S. Duchesne Dr, St Charles, Missouri 63301.
A private funeral service will be held.
