Robert L. ('Bob') Scott, resident of St. Charles, MO, died Monday, August 26 after a brief illness. A lifelong volunteer, Bob was involved in numerous volunteer activities, beginning when he enlisted in the Army in WWII and culminating with 20 years of service on the board for the Festival of the Little Hills. Bob was involved with Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, PTA and Little League baseball with his 3 children. As his family grew, his interests shifted to civic organizations and local government. He served as a St. Charles city councilman from 1987-1991. He served on the St. Charles Board of Adjustment, the Airport Expansion Advisory Committee, the Senior Citizens Advisory Board, the Charter Review Committee, the Festival of the Little Hills board, the County Historical Society (life member), the Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Committee, Lewis and Clark Rendezvous, and Friends of the Goldenrod. Along with his wife Clara, Bob has served as a volunteer with the St. Charles Tourism Bureau, greeting visitors to the St. Charles convention center at numerous events. Bob is a life member in the St. Charles Optimist Club, serving in several different capacities for many years. During this service, Bob received numerous awards and accolades for his countless hours of volunteer service. These awards include Optimist of the Year (1994) and President's Appreciation Award (1990).
Bob is a veteran of World War II. He served in Europe with the Army Ordinance Evacuation Company. During his army service, he earned two bronze stars. In 2000, he had the opportunity to return to France with family where he visited Utah Beach, his landing site in June 1944. On a family trip to Hawaii in 2011, Bob also had the chance to visit Pearl Harbor and the WWII memorial site at the Battleship Missouri. During that visit, Bob and his wife became 'instant celebrities' when the other visitors learned that both were WWII veterans. He was a member of the American Legion and a life member of the VFW.
Bob was born in Robinson, Illinois to Martha and Harry Scott on January 13, 1924. A graduate of Newton Community High School (1942), he moved his family to St. Charles where he attended St. Louis Aeronautical School (1949), learning the craft of airplane manufacturing. He was employed at McDonnell Aircraft Company (later McDonnell-Douglas) for 35 years, supervising the wing department of fighter jets. Specifically, he supervised the construction of the F-4 Phantom, from the prototype to the last plane off the line.
Bob married Clara 'Jean' Welliver on July 14, 1946 in Rock Island, Illinois. St. Charles has been their home for more than 60 years. In addition to his wife, Clara, of 67 years, Robert is survived by their 3 children: Dan (Roberta) of Houston, TX; Michael (Marsha) of Gustine, TX; and Patricia (John) Ezell of Loveland, Ohio. He was also blessed to know 6 granddaughters and 7 great-grandchildren. The family will receive visitors at Baue Funeral Home, 620 Jefferson Street, St. Charles, from 4-8 pm on Thursday, August 29. Additional visitation will be held on Friday, August 30 at 10 am at Faith United Methodist Church, 2950 Droste Road, St. Charles with the service following at 11 am. Burial will be at St. Charles Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.
