Sargena France Reed

Sargena (Jean) France Reed passed away January 7, 2022, at the age of 103 in Jefferson City, Missouri. She was born June 2, 1918, near Bellflower, Missouri, the daughter of Sarge and Mary Hensley Ball. She received her elementary education in a one room school near her home and then graduated from Montgomery City Public High School in May 1935. On January 23, 1942, she married the love of her life Wesley Warren Reed of Montgomery City. Theirs was a marriage of love and devotion that lasted almost 75 years.

Jean found a variety of employment as a teacher, newspaper editor, banking assistant, aircraft riveter and secretary before retiring from McDonnell Douglas as executive secretary. She spent her retirement years enjoying life with her family and friends, crocheting, painting, and traveling with Wes throughout the United States and Canada. She loved telling the story of her unusual name and its origins with the US troops in France during WWI. Jean and Wes were founding members of the Ferguson Christian Church before becoming members of the St. Charles Christian Church and then the First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson City.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband Wes and daughter Patricia Ann Traner and her husband Tom, her parents, and her siblings Helen Gaertner and husband Carl of Denver, Colorado, and brothers SSgt Bennett Ball US 8th Air Corps, Germany and David Ball and wife Dorothy of St. Charles. Remaining to remember her life is a son Warren E. (Gene) Reed and his wife Marcia of Jefferson City, grandson Aaron Reed and his wife Kelli and their sons Neil and Michael of Jefferson City, grandson Andrew Reed and his wife Merrit and their son Devon of Roy, Washington, and granddaughter Cynthia Ringo and her children Cody Cundiff and Cheyanna Moeser of Winfield, plus a host of relatives and friends. Her kindness, gentle spirit, and love of friends and family will be greatly missed but long remembered.
