Shirley J. Crugnale

February 26, 1932 — November 25, 2020

Shirley J. Crugnale of Saint Peters, MO, passed away at the age of 88 on Wednesday, November 25, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Crugnale; her grandchild, Jonathan Benne; her parents, John and Ruth Coe; and her son-in-law, Michael Eppard.

Shirley is survived by her daughters, Jan M. Eppard and Jean (Donald) Benne; her grandchildren, Leslie (Justin) Welchko, Garrett (Bridget) Dwiggins, and Brad Benne; her great-grandchildren, Annie Benne, Cadence Welchko, Lucy Welchko, and Jack Dwiggins; her sister by choice, Carole (the late Michael) Prothman; and her many beloved pets.

Shirley’s favorite childhood pastimes included going to the movies “for a nickel,” trips to Crown Candy with her friends, and watching the St. Louis Browns play baseball with her dad. Later, she met Tom, the love of her life, at a USO dance while he was a sergeant stationed at Scott Air Force Base. They married on April 18th, 1953 and shared fifty-seven wonderful years together. In 1956 they started their family and later moved to St. Charles where Shirley worked for the city. It was in the early 70s when Shirley went to work for St. Joseph Hospital in admissions where she and her co-workers fast became lifelong friends. Upon retirement, Shirley and Tom retired to Warrenton, Missouri where they enjoyed spending time together and traveling.

She was an active parishioner of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Warrenton. Her involvement with her church community extended to her membership with the Ladies Auxiliary for St. Joseph as well as the Knights of Columbus. She maintained generous and loving support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for many years. Throughout life Shirley was always a devout woman of faith and it is with that same faith that her family are able to say goodbye to her now, fully knowing that they will all one day be reunited in God’s heavenly home.

Shirley’s life was one well-lived and filled with family, friends, laughter, and love. Her happiest days were those when she was surrounded by family, laughing, and sharing a meal and stories with her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all whose lives she touched with her loving and caring nature.

A private service will be held in consideration of the health and safety of friends of the Crugnale family.
