Shirley Jean Masters

December 27, 1931 — June 26, 2022

Shirley Masters (nee Beckmann), beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2022.

Shirley was born to Marvin Beckmann and Lorene (Haeffner) Beckmann on December 27, 1931. She was raised in Hermann, Missouri, graduating from Hermann High School in 1949. She was married to James Donald Hoeman, and their union produced two sons, Michael and David.  She was employed by International Shoe Company, and later moved to Saint Charles, Missouri, to seek employment at McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft Company, later Boeing.  She was married to Robert Masters in 1972, and she and Bob retired in 1986. In retirement, she worked part-time for many years at Dierberg’s Markets, where she greatly enjoyed the relationships she developed with her coworkers and customers.

Shirley loved music, particularly vocal music, and sang both in high school and with several dance bands around the Hermann, Missouri, area as a young adult.  She participated in choirs at Saint Paul UCC in Hermann, and at Good Shepherd UCC in Saint Charles for many years.  She and Bob were involved in several dance clubs, another way of expressing her love of music.  Shirley and Bob loved to travel, and they traveled extensively in their retirement years, making many friends at each destination.  She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and maintained very close relationships with them until her last days, providing them with unconditional love, wise counsel, and treasured memories.  The arrival of great-grandchildren brought her particular joy.  Shirley was generous and outgoing, making friends everywhere she went.  It can be truly said that Shirley loved people, and they loved her in return.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Nancy Hoeman and David and Mary Anne Hoeman, and stepdaughters Diane Alwes and Patricia Masters.  She is also survived by grandchildren Melissa (Zach) Carlberg, Christopher (Stephanie) Hoeman, Stephanie Hoeman, Christine Hoeman, Laura (Aaron) Skidis, Lisa (Johnny) Bevilaqua, Tammy (David) Brown, Trish (Matthew) Wehrle, Garrett Austin, Dominic Masters, Michelle Masters, and 15 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Lorene Beckmann, her husband, Robert Masters, and a stepson, Mick Masters.

Funeral services will be at 11:00am, July 11th, at Saint John United Church of Christ in St. Charles, Missouri.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, with burial following at St Charles Memorial Gardens.  The family would like especially to thank the staff at Breeze Park and Lutheran Senior Services Hospice for their loving and compassionate care of our loved one.

“Those we hold most dear never truly leave us… they live on in the kindnesses they showed, the comfort they shared, and the love they brought into our lives.”
