Thelma Harris Griffin Glover

January 1, 1920 — September 9, 2018

Thelma Harris Griffin Glover was born January 5, 1920. She was the youngest daughter of Eugene and Estella Harris, and grew up during The Great Depression. The family raised enough livestock and produce to feed the entire neighborhood, which they did on many occasions.

Her education began in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she graduated from McKinley High School. She later earned a bachelor's degree from Southern University and a master's degree in Education from Louisiana State University. Further studies ensued at Chicago University and the University of Maryland.

Throughout her lifetime, Mrs. Glover was committed to supporting her community through membership in various civic and social organizations. Her main objectives were raising community awareness, and supporting education. Thelma was a loving, compassionate individual, and the depth of her kindness and generosity is largely untold.

Thelma remained a native of Baton Rouge and was employed as an elementary school principal in the East Baton Rouge Parish school system. Students and teachers alike deeply appreciated her many years of devoted service to all under her care. She loved her work, and was deeply involved in the interests of her students. When she interacted with them, she was not only concerned with what they were learning, but also the hurdles they faced outside of the classroom. She helped hundreds of students to reach their potential and lead successful lives.

Her hobbies included gardening, cooking, reading, interior design, traveling, and reminiscing about the “early years.” She passed away on September 9, 2018, in Saint Louis, Missouri, while in the loving care of her daughter, Mrs. Lisa Griffin Riggins. She was a dear mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, aunt, cousin and beloved friend to many.

Mrs. Glover was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward S. Griffin; her second husband, Elmer T. Glover, her parents, Eugene and Estella Harris; sisters, Elnora Harris Laborde and Wilhelmina Harris Haynes; her brothers, Eugene Harris Jr. and Clarence Harris.

In addition to her daughter, Lisa Griffin Riggins and husband James, she also leaves to cherish her life, four granddaughters and  a grandson, Faye Riggins Morrison (Tony), Rhonda Riggins-Farrell (Chad), Kristie Riggins Montgomery (Brian), Michael Riggins, and Kimberly Riggins Russ, all of St. Louis, six great grandchildren, Ashley Morrison, Anthony Morrison, Aaron Simpson, Madison Farrell, Cameron Farrell, Brian Montgomery, and Alaina Montgomery; three great-great grandchildren, Gregory Keeper, Alyssia Isadore and Alann Isadore, all of St. Louis; a host of great-nieces and great-nephews, including Sheila Dozier (Dennis) of Long Beach, California, David Fields (Karla) of Alamo, California, Johnny Harris Jr., David Harris, Kevin Dotson (Ella), Kelvin Laborde and Evonne Thomas, all of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and a multitude of other loving relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
