Virgil A. Wiesner

September 27, 1925 — May 23, 2018

Beloved husband of Rosemary Wiesner (nee Woods) for 68 years. Devoted father of Rick (Paula) Wiesner, Randy Wiesner, Brad (Cathy) Wiesner, Valerie (Eddie) McDevitt, and Traci Wiesner; loving grandfather of Crystal, Taylor, Danielle, Gia, Anthony, Jeffrey, Alex, Jason, Siara, Raine and Michael; treasured great-grandfather of Kyrie. Virgil is preceded in death by his sons Todd and Tim and granddaughter Kristina.

As a young man he was an avid outdoors man who enjoyed fishing, hunting and canoeing. In high school he was a national rifle champion. In his senior year in high school he enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served his country proudly in WWII on the islands of Saipan, Tinian and in the battle of Okinawa.

After the war, he and Rosemary married and moved to Overland Mo. where they raised 5 sons and 2 daughters. He was a professional photographer for over 20 years capturing the images of many St. Louis events, weddings, celebrities and babies. Then he went on to work as a Conservation Specialist for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for over 30 years. He was also a Scoutmaster leading many boy scout camping and canoe trips.

Besides being a biologist, Virgil was also a botanist and avid gardener. He enjoyed his garden of Missouri’s wildflowers and a rose garden that produced many award winning blooms for Shaw’s Garden annual Rose Show. He liked being a family man spending time with his seven children going on vacations and other adventures.

In his senior years, he and Rosemary retired and moved to St. Peters Mo. where he tended his gardens, continued outdoor photography and was active with the US Marine Corps League. As a proud grandfather he spent a great deal of time with his grandchildren.

Virgil touched many lives on his life 's journey and left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He is a great loss to the family and will be missed by all.

Memorial donations may be made in Virgil’s honor to Missouri Botanical Garden.
